In a musty old hall in Detroit they prayed,
in the “Maritime Sailors’ Cathedral.”
The church bell chimed ‘til it rang twenty-nine times
for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Gordon Lightfoot - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

On November 11, 1975, the wreckage of the Edmund Fitzgerald was found. No trace of the crew - twenty-nine souls - were ever recovered.

The Fitz was the last of the major vessels to be lost on Lake Superior - changes in shipping regulations, improved weather prediction, GPS and other technological improvements - as well as an increased willingness on the parts of skippers to drop anchor, and/or delay transit in a major storm, have all contributed to this.

Rest in peace to all souls lost in the Great Lakes, especially the 29 souls on the Edmund Fitzgerald
